A Brief History of Wawa

On April 16, 1964, Grahame Wood opened the first Wawa Food Market at 1212 MacDade Boulevard in Folsom, Pennsylvania although the Wawa business really started way back in 1803 as an iron foundry in New Jersey. George Wood, Grahame’s grandfather, founded the Wawa Dairy Farm in 1890 in Delaware County, Pennsylvania.

With the strong demand for milk products, the Wawa Dairy Farm grew as well by delivering bottled milk to its customers in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. The shift of consumers to purchasing milk in stores rather than having them delivered happened during the 1960s, thus, the opening of the Wawa Food Market concept was an effort to adjust to changing consumer preferences.

Wawa, Inc. now generates $15 billion in revenue annually. Though the company was originally a multi-generational family business, but has transformed into a privately held powerhouse. On April 28 of 2023, the company reached 1,000 stores and is continuously expanding without leveraging franchising to fuel the expansion efforts.  

Is there a secret menu at Wawa?

Wawa’s secret menu is always changing. Customers have to constantly surf the store’s touchscreen to know what is being offered. One secret menu that can be found in the Jalapeno Berry Lemonade drink which can also be ordered in liquid or frozen form. 

Other secret items have been teased through Wawa’s social media platforms regarding like when the company described the Jalapeno Berry Lemonade drink as their “spiciest secret” when they introduced “The Schwarbomb”, an energy drink with immunity added and Instagram posts telling consumers to “grab a Spicy Crispy Chicken Sandwich”.

• Rainbow Bagels: These bagels are not only stunningly decorated with rainbow colors but also mark the anniversary of Wawa’s opening.

There are so many ways to save at Wawa that it’s hard to keep track of all simultaneous promotions. Thankfully, Wawa makes it easy to find the latest deals on their promotions page. Wawa will also publish out other promo codes like “CELEBRATE” to get a 10% off an order. During the past Teachers and Nurses Appreciation Week, a 20% discount was given for Wawa Catering using the promo code “THANKYOU20”.

In October 2022, Wawa offered a discount of $0.15 for every gallon of gas purchased using the Wawa app and after registering for Wawa rewards. A “Fueling Good” initiative was launched from October to November 2022, and here, consumers were also given the chance to win free fuel for a year sweepstakes. By being Wawa Rewards members, Wawa customers will earn rewards for every purchase of any Wawa product. Furthermore, the company gives surprise bonus rewards to its members and sweepstakes like free Shorti’s for year.

Wawa, Inc. shows appreciation for customers and communities by offering numerous (usually free) activities throughout the year. For example, during Wawa Day on April 13 2023, stores had all sorts of giveaways for guests like special “Day Brighteners” for customers and employees who went the extra mile for someone else. These good samaritans were publicly acknowledge and provided gift baskets that honored the good deeds.

Free cups of coffee were also provided to any guest who visited a Wawa store on April 13. On November 11, Veterans were given free coffee to honor these brave men and women. Graduation parties or any celebration was given a 10% discount for Wawa Catering online orders for a limited time. 

The 2023 Wawa Welcome America event is a huge 16-day celebration filled with free family-friendly activities including history, learning, concerts, fireworks, and the iconic Wawa Hoagie Day. Here are the key free events:

1. Free Admission to the African American Museum in Philadelphia: On June 19, 2023, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., guests can enjoy free admission to the museum, family-friendly festivities, performances, activities, and free smoothies.
2. Fitness to Fly: On June 22, 2023, from 4pm to 6pm at Esperanza, Bristol Streets between 3rd and 5th Streets, attendees can enjoy performances, food trucks, and the Wawa Smoothie Truck. Kids of all ages and abilities can participate in exercise and dance clinics, cheer sessions hosted by the Philadelphia Eagles Cheerleaders, and a sensory-friendly fitness class.
3. Free Admission to the National Constitution Center: On June 28, 2023, from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, Wawa offers free admission to the National Constitution Center.
4. Wawa Hoagie Day®: On June 28, 2023, starting at noon, Wawa will continue its tradition of building and serving 25,000 Shorti® Hoagies, and hosting a Hoagies for Heroes hoagie-building competition. Additionally, 1,000 stores chainwide will build and donate more than 30,000 hoagies to local first responders and healthcare heroes.
5. July 4th Parade, Concert & Fireworks: On July 4, 2023, the day kicks off with the Celebration of Freedom Ceremony at Independence Hall, including recognition of The Wawa Foundation Hero Award Finalists. The day concludes with Philly’s largest free outdoor concert and a dazzling fireworks spectacular on The Parkway from 7pm to 9pm.

Does Wawa have a Mac & Cheese?

Yes. There are six varieties of Mac & Cheese to choose from available in small, medium, large, and family-size orders. The varieties of Wawa’s Mac & Cheese that can be available in the stores are plain Mac & Cheese, Buffalo Mac & Cheese, Rancho Mac & Cheese, Chipotle Mac & Cheese, Sriracha Mac & Cheese, and Garlic Aioli Mac & Cheese.

Does Wawa bake their own rolls?

Wawa doesn’t bake their rolls in-house. The company contracts with local baking companies to produce their rolls based on Wawa’s specifications. Since 2008, Wawa has partnered with Vineland’s Omni Baking Co. Working with a partner ensures that the rolls are fresh and consistent across the 1,000+ Wawa locations. 

In 1998, the Wawa Bakery was introduced. Wawa first bought its sandwich rolls from Amoroso’s Baking Company located in southwest Philadelphia. 

Wawa uses rolls for their sandwiches or “hoagies” as they are called in the Philadelphia area. Rolls are desirable sandwich holders since they are soft yet sturdy enough to hold up to the generous fillings.

What kind of turkey does Wawa use?

Wawa uses a variety of turkey in sandwiches. Their menu usually includes oven-roasted turkey, which is a common option for their hoagies. 

In addition to oven-roasted turkey, Wawa also offers a variety of turkey-based options depending on the season. For instance, they have been known to offer a Gobbler Hoagie leading up to Thanksgiving, which is a seasonal sandwich featuring hot turkey, stuffing, gravy, and cranberry sauce.

Wawa has several products that make utilize Turkey as a primary ingredient. Menu items that highlight this bird include Ciabatta sandwiches, Roasted Turkey and Honey Smoked Turkey sandwiches, Southwest Chipotle Turkey Panini, Turkey, Spicy Turkey, Turkey and Ham, Turkey Vegie Ranch Club sandwiches, the Turkey BLT Salad and the Turkey & Swiss Slider. 

Does Wawa sell egg salad? 

Wawa discontinued the sale of egg salad in all of its stores around 2020 or during the start of the pandemic. Reasons for this are low sales and high spoilage of said salad. There was a high risk for the ingredients to spoil because of the main ingredient, which is egg. 

Does Wawa sell macaroni salad?

Wawa does not anymore sell macaroni salad. They discontinued offering this menu item due to its low sales and the high possibility of it to spoil.

What hoagie sizes are available at Wawa? 

 There are four hoagie sizes in Wawa’s retail stores listed below. 

•   Junior Hoagie, 4 inches in length, the shortest.  
•   Shorti Hoagie, 6 inches in length, the most popular hoagie size.
•   Classic Hoagie, 10 inches in length.
•   Two-Footer Hoagie, 24 inches in length, the longest available hoagie.

Are gluten-free options available at Wawa?

Wawa’s official website has a Gluten-Conscious menu. A total of 15 meals are being suggested and these fall under 4 categories, Breakfast, Salads, Bowls, and Sides & Snacks. The ingredients for each are listed for customers to easily decide which of the suggested meals he prefers. 

For breakfast, gluten-conscious consumers can either try Wawa’s Chicken Steak and Egg White Omelet Bowl or the Scrambled Egg Breakfast Bowl or the Cinnamon Brown Sugar Oatmeal. For salads, they can have Chef Salad or Southwest Chicken Salad or Italian Antipasto Salad.

Under the Bowls category, the options are Quinoa and Roasted Chicken Bowl, Rice and Bean Bowl, and Lettuce and Oven Roasted Turkey Bowl. Under the Sides & Snacks group, one can find Side Cup of Mashed Potatoes, Rice or Black Beans, the Express Fruit Cups, the Express Farmhouse Garden Veggie Salad, the Express Snack Pack, the Express Apple Peanut Butter Dipper, and the Express Apple Peanut Butter Snack Cup.

Wawa reminds customers, though, that the ingredients and meals they have listed on their webpage are all without gluten but are not certified to be gluten-free. Cross-contamination could occur in the storage, freight, and preparation areas of Wawa.

Does Wawa offer free Wifi for guests?

Wawa has continued to live up to its core values, specifically delighting customers, embracing change, and valuing people, by offering free Wifi to its guests in all of its retail stores since 2016 when they collaborated with Comcast. This is a move by Wawa in order to fulfill their customers’ lives and to make every guest visit enjoyable and satisfying.

To get free Wifi, a patron must access “xfinitywifi” SSID on their mobile device. The introduction of a strong and reliable Wifi connection is just one more reason to visit Wawa. 

Does Wawa sell beer?

The Wawa locations that sell beer are Pennsylvania, Delaware, Virginia, Florida and New York. Wawa first sold beer at its Chadds Ford location on December 10, 2018. A collaboration was made between Wawa and the Aston-based 2SP Brewing Company to come up with the first beer with the Wawa logo, the Winter Reserve Coffee Stout.

From this first store, Wawa started to expand its stores with liquor licenses.  With more collaborations with other beer companies, Wawa expanded its liquor business from then on. 

Does Wawa have plans to expand?

Wawa is seriously geared to open new markets to regions that are looking for value-for-money products and a satisfying all-around convenience store experience. They have made several announcements regarding expansion plans that have already been laid out. 

As early as June 2022, the company has expressed its plan to open the first Nashville store in 2025. New markets are being eyed. Current market areas are being expanded. Given Wawa’s management commitment to Fulfilling Lives, Every Day, they are always seeking for growth to be able to have a wider customer range for their fresh and quality food and beverage products.

In Florida, 40 new stores will be opened in 2024. Adjacent markets are also eyed, like plans to open new stores in Kentucky, Indiana, and Ohio in 2025, same as the Nashville store’s timeline. Actually, Wawa is open to site suggestions from real estate representatives in connection to their expansion plans. Wawa CEO Chris Gheysens said that his plan is to have a Wawa store in around 1,800 locations by the year 2030.

Are there plans to go public?

Wawa is enjoying its growth as a private family-owned business and has no plans of going public at present. With the success of the Wawa Markets, many have been asking how to buy the company’s stock. Wawa has never made a public announcement about offering the stock options to the public. However, Wawa employees have the privilege of owning shares of stocks of this company through an employee stock purchase program, and as of February 2023, a reported 40% is owned by Wawa associates.
