How To Use Tofu As Giniling In Meals

You might already know that you can make firm tofu or tokwa look like scrambled eggs. Firm tofu is crumbled before being cooked in a frying pan. The off-white paleness of the tofu is offset when you add this surprising but almost flavorless spice: ground turmeric. The turmeric colors the tofu egg-yellow but doesn't add too much else in terms of flavor. The yellow color is adding other spices and salt to make you think that you really are eating an egg. Whether you're eating this for breakfast or want breakfast for dinner, this is another great way to introduce tofu into your everyday meals. 

This is a fantastic example of how tofu can be a meat substitute for giniling. The process is simple and since tokwa is firm enough that a minimal squeeze is all you need to take it from the familiar block to a crumble that mimics ground meat. Then it's just a matter of seasoning it to taste a little like the meat you want it to mimic with either a neutral soy sauce for both flavor and color plus a little stock powder. 

Here's what you do to make tofu crumble: 

  1. 1 Break up 1 500-gram tofu block with your hands until large chunks are formed. Place the crumbled tofu in a kitchen towel and wrap it over a bowl or the sink.
  1. 2 Twist the kitchen towel to squeeze out excess water from the tofu. Alternatively, place it on a tray on your kitchen counter and press out as much moisture as you can, draining the water that is squeezed out as necessary. 
  1. 3 Heat a nonstick frying pan over medium heat and add oil. Add crumbled tofu and saute until just heated through. For color and seasoning, add 2 tablespoons soy sauce and 1/4 teaspoon your choice of stock powder or cube, crumbled, and stir to combine. 
  1. 4 Continue to cook until combined and tofu starts to turn slightly crisp. 

Once you have this crumbled faux giniling, you can use this to substitute for the ground meat in these recipes:
